Parayarukala Devi Temple

History

This is one of the popular temples in central Travancore.  The place where the temple stands today was thick forest in the ancient days. A man who came to cut firewood from the forest, saw a most beautiful divine looking lady there. The lady asked him not to speak about what he had seen (parayaruth in Malayalam). But the terrified man reported the matter to the eldest male member of the Pathisseril family. Immediately the man lost his eyesight. The head of the family to whom the matter was reported, was very pious and a devotee of Goddess Kali. He went to the spot pointed out more by the woodcutter. Serpents stood blocking his way. But that night he had a vision of the mild form of Goddess Bhadrakali along with eight serpents. The family built a temple for the Goddess at the spot where the resplendent form had been seen first. Later on, the temple came to be managed by the representatives of the eight regions in Mulakuzha panchayath. The place has now come to be known as Parayarukala.
