Mulayanthanni Devi Temple

History

This is one of the ancient temples of South Travancore. One legend about the temple is about an Englishman who made fun of the name of the temple. During the rule of the Maharaja of Travancore, it was decided to build the bridge at Karamana in Thiruvananthapuram. The stones for the construction were to be brought from Kallumala, near Mulayanthanni Kavu. One day an Englishman, who was engaged in the construction of the bridge came to the Kavu. He asked someone what this place was and he was informed that it was Mulayanthanni kavu. The Englishman derisively commented that he could not see any breast or more milk there making fun of the name of the place. When the man was coming back a terrible voice was heard asking him to see what he wanted to see there. A figure of the chest appeared on the Thanni tree and milk started oozing out of the breasts. The Englishman went to the Kavu and apologised to the Goddess. In 1968 a committee was formed to protect the Kavu. In 1978 the consecration of the idol of Devi was performed. In 2001 a new temple was constructed and the Goddess in the milder form was consecrated there.
