Chethallur Panamkurrissi Bhagavathy Temple

History

Chethallur Panamkurrissi Bhagavathy Temple, also known as Panamkurussikavu Temple, is located in the Mannarkkad taluk of Palakkad District, Kerala. The presiding deity of this sacred temple is the revered Goddess Bhagavaty. According to folklore, the goddess was originally worshipped under a massive Palmera tree and, when the tree was felled, a temple was constructed to house the deity. This temple came to be known as Panamuruchi Temple but eventually became commonly referred to as Panamkurussi Temple. One of the grandest celebrations associated with the Panamkurussikavu temple is the Panamkurussikavu Pooram festival. This vibrant festival spans eight days, commencing with the more Makayiram asterism in the Malayalam month of Meenam (March-April). The sixth and seventh days are especially significant, known as Valiyarattu and Pooram, respectively. On the sixth day, the goddess is ceremoniously bathed in the temple pond, and the festivities come alive with a plethora of folk arts, including Thayampaka Melam, classical dances such as Kathakali, and the devotional 'Bale' dance, which continues throughout the night. The culminating day, known as the Pooram day, witnesses a grand Vela procession that sets out from Chethallur Srikrishna Temple, Pulikkal Sivakshetram, and Srikrishna Kshetram of Vellinezhi. Various regions, including Mambra Desam, Mankuzhi Vela, Thekkan Vela, and Thazhekode Vela, converge at the temple compound in the evening. The main attraction of this magnificent procession includes Panchavadyam, Melam, Shingari Melam, Kumbhattam, Thara Vesham, Poothana Vesham, and a striking display of 30 caparisoned elephants, each adorned with opulent decorations. Devotees and spectators flock to the temple in large numbers to witness this splendid ceremony. Panamkurussikavu Pooram concludes with the sacred bath in the nearby river at the Arattu Kadavu on the eighth day.
