In the 108 Sivalaya Stotra, the place is mentioned as "Kodumboor Ashtamikkovil Pattanakkadu Thashtayil." However, according to a note in 108 Sivalakshetrangal by Kunjikuttan Illayath, it is referred to as Pattinikkadu. This suggests that at some point in history, the name may have evolved from "Pattinikkadu" (Forest of Poverty) to "Pattanakkadu" (Forest of Town). Regardless of its historical name, the temple is now located right along the National Highway to Kanyakumari (NH-66, formerly NH-17). Observing the bustling activity on the highway, it seems likely that the transition to "Pattanakkadu" coincided with the development of this major roadway.
