Ameda Temple is located on the banks of Vembanad Lake, in Tripunithura -Vaikom route, 20Kms south of Ernakulam. The sanctum sanctorum is dedicated to Sapthamathrukkal - Brahmani, Maheshwari, Kowmari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani and Chamundi and Veerabhadran and Ganapathy. Legends connect the consecration here with Parasurama. Once when he was travelling along the western coast, he reached the place where the temple is located now. As he stepped into the lake for his evening prayers, he saw a bright light in the distance. Curious to know more about it he started walking towards it in the centre of the lake. But soon he came to know
more that it was the Saptha Mathrukkal travelling on a tortoise. The tortoise had to stop as the water had parted to make way for the Sage. Since his action in moving towards the centre had caused the tortoise to stop there, Parasurama decided to build a temple for the Sapthamathrukkal there. As it was the place where the tortoise (Aama in Malayalam) had stopped, the place came to be known as Aamaninnayidam which later became Ameda. The main sanctum has three doors and all of them will be opened only on two days in a year - One is on the 41st day of Guruthy pooja and next is on the "Aarattu" day of main festival on "Uthram" star in Meenam. On the rest of the days, only 2 doors of the temple will be opened. There are shrines dedicated to Nagaraja and Nagayakshi on the north west and north east of the temple compound. There is also a shrine dedicated to Maha Vishnu. The main festival is in the month of Meenam. The temple is managed by Ameda Mangalam family.
