Ernakulam Sree Hanuman Kovil

History

Hanuman Kovil in Ernakulam is a place of profound significance, dedicated to Shree Anjaneya, revered as a 'Chiranjeevi' in all Yugas and a devoted disciple of Lord Shree Rama from the Tretha Yuga. Anjaneya's valor and wisdom were acknowledged by Mother Sita Devi herself when he appeared as Lord Rama's messenger before her, earning her praise. The temple's origin is detailed in the historical account found in "History of Cochin State" by K.P. Padmanabha Menon. Sri. Venkat Rao, also known as Venkoba Rao, served as the Dewan of the erstwhile Cochin state from 1856 to 1860 AD during the reign of Maharaja Ravi Varma. It was more during his tenure that the Hanuman Temple was constructed. Venkat Rao, a devout Kannada Brahmin, discovered and reverently worshipped the Hanuman idol in his home. Recognizing that a proper and ideal place for the deity was in a temple, he approached the king for suitable land. In a gracious gesture, the king granted 22 cents of land on the eastern side of the renowned Siva temple (Ernakulathappan) in Ernakulam in the year 1857, corresponding to ME 1032. The Maharaja himself was a devout visitor to the temple, and his passing in 1932 marked the loss of a gracious patron. The consecration of the reigning deity was carried out by His Holiness Viswapriya Thirtha Swamiji (1776-1865), popularly known as Vrindavana Acharya of Udupi Sode Vadiraja Mutt, at Dewan Venkat Rao's request. An inscription in Sanskrit on a granite block in front of the temple still recounts this historic event. It's noteworthy that while most temples in the Madhwa Sampradaya have Lord Krishna as the presiding deity, this Ernakulam temple is an exception, dedicated to Anjaneya and consecrated by a Matadhipathi of Udipi. From its humble beginnings, the temple has grown to its present grandeur, thanks to the blessings of "Karya Siddhi Anjaneya" and the dedicated efforts of the temple management. Devotees from far and wide seek solace here, believing that worshipping the Lord can alleviate life's worries and cares. Today, the temple stands as an ancient and well-maintained shrine in Kerala. Within the temple premises, there is a Nagaraja prathishta, the only Upadevatha in the temple. Ayilya pooja and Abhishekams conducted here draw hundreds of devotees. Additionally, the Sri Raghavendra Brindavan, popularly known as the "Lord of Mantralaya," was consecrated in 1994, attracting those who have visited Mantralaya as well as those who haven't, seeking their wishes to be fulfilled. All the temple's rituals and poojas strictly adhere to the Tantrasara Vedic agamas and the traditions ordained by the Udupi Madhwa Samsthan. The trustees have taken great care to maintain a clean and serene atmosphere within the premises, fostering an environment conducive to devout worship.
