The Iranikulam Sree Mahadeva Temple boasts a rich history, with numerous stone inscriptions unearthed within its sacred grounds. These inscriptions chronicle various aspects, including penalties for those who transgressed the temple's regulations and detailed records of property donations made to the temple. This revered place of worship serves as the village temple for Airanikulam village, one among the sixty-four villages. As the Chera dynasty's influence waned, the temple's administration passed into the hands of the Nambuthiris. However, historical accounts suggest that during a period of civil strife among the Nambuthiris, the Illakas, who were the ruling elite, divided into two factions. This division led to the more installation of two distinct Shiva deities within the temple's precincts, known as Thekkedathappan and Vadakkedathappan.
