Makaliyam Sree Rama Swami Temple

History

The Makaliyam Sree Rama Swami Temple is situated in Irumpanam, near Trippunithura, nestled between Karingachira and Kakkanad. This unique temple in Tripunithura is dedicated to Lord Sree Rama, facing the west side, and is under the administration of the Cochin Devaswom Board. The day-to-day operations are overseen by the Makaliyam Kshetra Upadesaka Samithi (MKUS), a voluntary organization led by the local community. Within this sacred temple, Lord Rama assumes the formidable Kharasamhara Bhava, standing with 18 hands holding various weapons and instruments. This form represents Lord Rama's immense power after vanquishing the demon king Khara, along with his brothers Dooshana and Thrissirass, and a host of fourteen thousand more other demons. Khara was a devout follower of Lord Shiva, and at the end of the battle, he implored Lord Rama to reveal himself in the form of Lord Shiva to illustrate the unity of Shiva and Vishnu. As a result, Lord Rama appears with a third eye, symbolizing this divine revelation. The construction of this temple took place between AD 1100 and 1300. Approximately two centuries ago, a devastating fire ravaged the temple, causing extensive damage to the gopurams and oottupura (dining hall). The local community came together to rebuild the temple, which now boasts a copper dwaja (flagpost) and all the architectural elements typical of a traditional Kerala temple. The Sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum) is circular in shape with a conical roof.
