According to some scholars, historical records attribute the construction of the temple to the Travancore kingdom. However, local legends tell a captivating tale of its origin. It is said that members of the Travancore royal family, including the king, embarked on an annual pilgrimage to the Attingal Tharavadu Kavu for the Ariyittuvazhcha ritual. During their journey, the royal entourage passed through the area that is now home to the Thonnal Devi temple. On one such occasion, the king's horse carriage suffered a significant breakdown right at the site of the present-day Thonnal temple. That night, the king had a vivid dream in which a divine revelation occurred.
more It was revealed to him that the very spot where the horse carriage had come to a halt was sacred ground, graced by the presence of Goddess Shakti. In response to this divine message, the king took it upon himself to construct a temple at the site, honoring the presence of Goddess Shakti.
