Poovathur Sree Mahavishnu Temple

History

The Poovathur Sree Mahavishnu Temple is a Hindu temple situated in Koodali, in the Kannur district of Kerala, India. This temple is dedicated to Lord Bhagavan Vishnu and Goddess Poovathoor Amma, also known as Goddess Durga. With a rich historical background, it holds a prominent place among the 108 Durga temples in Kerala. According to legend, this temple originally served as a Durga shrine, but for reasons unknown, the worship of Devi was discontinued and replaced with the worship of Lord Vishnu. In 2010 CE, a dedicated Durga Shrine was constructed and a murti of Durga was consecrated here. The primary deity of this temple more takes the form of Lord Vishnu as Krishna, the slayer of Shishupala, holding the Sudarshana Chakra. The upa devatas honored here are Ganapathi and Srichakram. The temple complex features a chuttambalam (outer courtyard), a two-tier chathura sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum), a namaskara mandapam (prayer hall), a kodimaram (flagpole), and a pond. The temple's architectural beauty is complemented by various sculptures, including one depicting Lord Vishnu's triumph over Shishupala. Annually, the temple hosts a festival in the Makara Masam period (January-February), spanning seven days. The highlight of the festival is the Pongala ritual, conducted on Makara Sankramana day, which marks the beginning of the month of Makara. This ritual serves as an expression of gratitude to the goddess for the bountiful harvest. Throughout the festival, the temple is adorned with flowers and illuminated with lights. An array of cultural and religious events is organized to celebrate the occasion. The festivities culminate with the Arattu ceremony, during which the deities are taken in procession to a nearby pond for a ceremonial bath.
