Kunnathu Sree Mahadeva Temple

History

This temple is situated at Chenganoor, in Alapuzha district. It is centuries old and the devotees are sure about the efficacy of their prayers to the Lord here. The most important offering here is Kottum Chiriyum (Clap and Laugh). Devotees offer it to get rid of the problems that affect their mind, to be cured of diseases and to find the valuable things that have been stolen or misplaced. This is offered in the evening after the Deepaaraadhana. Those who offer this will bring fruits, appam, laddu and other sweets and keep it on the Mandapam in front of the sanctum. The poojari will offer these more to the Lord. Then the children who are there will laugh and clap their hands in joy. The Lord becomes pleased with the devotee who has made the children happy and blesses him with what he has prayed for. The fruits and sweets are distributed among those who are gathered there. They eat them while still in the temple compound. There is a legend that is associated with this offering. In the past this place was a forest area. The priest had gathered some fruits from the forest to offer to the Lord. While he had gone to gather flowers for the puja some children of the forest dwellers ate the fruits. The poojari was saddened and worried about what he would offer the Lord. As the poojari and some others who had come there on hearing the cry of the man stood in the temple, they heard a voice telling them that he was pleased with the children enjoying the fruits. Hearing this as the voice of the Lord all those who were gathered there clapped and laughed in joy. There is legend about the origin of the temple too. After his marriage with Parvathy, Lord Siva had come to Chenganoor at the request of Sage Agasthya. Sage Shakthikunda, an ardent devotee of Mahadeva came there. He was not happy about worshipping the Lord when he was with Parvathy. So, he sat in meditation on a corner of the temple compound at Chenganoor and requested the Lord to appear before him alone. The Lord did as he prayed and the Sage consecrated him there. The remnants of a pond known Shakhikunda where the sage is supposed to have taken bath can still be seen here. The temple is now under the Travancore Devaswom Board.
