Eramathoor Sree Surya Temple

History

This temple is situated at Eramathoor in Mavelikara in Alapuzha. The temple dedicated to Surya faces the west. There is a temple with Bhadrakalai consecrated in it, facing the east opposite to it.  This is one of the most famous Surya temples in India. The temple is believed to have been constructed in the 13th century based on the age of the temples nearby. One of the legends says that Naranathubranthan, son of Vararuchi came to this place and as he was a devotee of Suya, remained there for a long time. There is a pond named Naranathukulam and the houses there are also named more Naranathukunnel. While Naranathubranthan was staying here the consecration of Lord Krishna at Ambalapuzha was fixed. But the idol could not be fixed on its position. After astrological consultations, Naranathubranthan was invited to Ambalapuzha and he is believed to have succeeded in fixing the idol. The idol of Surya with four arms in the temple is three feet high and does not show any signs of deterioration due to the passage of time. There are no subordinate deities consecrated here.
