Chirakkarakavu Bhagavathy Temple

History

Chirakkarakavu Bhagavathy Temple, located in Keezhperoor, Kilimanoor, Thiruvananthapuram (TVM), is a venerable shrine with historical significance. It is dedicated to the goddess Kaali, revered in her three forms as Thrigunaathmika. This temple's origins trace back to a sacred event when the goddess manifested herself in the Koduvally River. It was subsequently constructed by Chirakkkal Raja, the ruler of Kolathiri, and thus earned the name Sree Chirakkakavu. According to local legend, the goddess Kaali emerged in the azhimugham of Vamal, accompanied by her divine retinue, in a palace situated at the confluence of the river and the sea. She appeared in the form of a divine fish, more and this location is now recognized as Vamal, the sacred Sree Moolasthana of Sree Chirakkakavu Bhagavathi. Chirakkal Raja paid homage to the goddess at this site and decided to construct the temple atop Illikkunnu, believed to be an ancient hermitage from a bygone era. The temple is surrounded by lush groves of trees and boasts a rich history spanning at least 800 years. Recently, the Sreekovil, the inner sanctum, underwent renovation, and in the year 2000, a Punaprathishta ceremony was conducted with the installation of the Astabandha Kalasam.
