Kuthiravattom Dharmashastha Temple

History

This is one of the most important temples of central Travancore region of earlier times. The main deity is Shastha with his wife Prabha and son Sathyakan.  The sculptures that adorn the walls of the sanctum of this temple are a treat to the eye. On top of the sanctum is the sculpture of Ananthashayanam.  There are many small holes on the walls of the sanctum made in such a way that they do not mar the beauty of the sculptures.  Outside the inner portion of the temple are some plaques with writings that have not been deciphered so far which show how ancient the temple more is. This temple was under the Edappally royal family. Then it was entrusted with a family at Kotukulangara. Legend says that during an attack by the Dutch forces, the local people performed a Patayani named Ilanthayum patayum, which terrified the attacking forces. This place where the Dutch forces were captured came to be known as Kuthirapettitam and later Kuthiravattom.
