Ankarath Parijathapuram Vishnu Temple

History

Ankarath Parijathapuram Vishnu Temple, revered as the "kuladeivam" (family deity) of the Ankarath family, has always been and remains the heart of the tharavad (family home). Nestled within a separate 0.75-acre plot within the tharavad premises, this temple is dedicated to Lord Mahavishnu, serving as the primary deity. Alongside Lord Mahavishnu, the temple also honors Lord Shiva, Lord Ganapathy, and Bhagavathy as its Upadevathas. The temple premises not only function as the spiritual center but also house the administrative hub for all temple-related activities. Additionally, it serves as the office of the Ankarath Parijathapuram Vishnu Kshetram Trust. Adjacent to the Vishnu temple, there is also more a temple dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali. The divine consecration for Goddess Bhadrakali here mirrors that of the renowned Thirumanthankunnu Bhagavathy temple in Angadipuram, near Perinthalmanna. The ancestral roots of the Ankarath family are closely intertwined with the Mankada Kovilakam, the royal family of Valluvanad. Thirumanathankunnu Bhagavathy temple stands as the family temple of the Valluvanad kings. The presence of the Bhadrakali temple within the Ankarath tharavad is a testament to the preservation of this historical connection between the Ankarath tharavad and the Mankada Kovilakam. Similar to many other venerable joint family homes (tharavads) in the Malabar region, the Ankarath tharavad also houses an ancient "Sarpakkavu" adjacent to the main temple, where regular pujas are performed to appease the serpent deities. In addition to the primary temple, the Ankarath Parijathapuram Vishnu Temple complex encompasses various structures and facilities, including an office room, accommodations for the temple Thanthri (head priest), a spacious hall for bhajans (devotional songs), Kulappera (family priest), and a large temple tank (kulam). Remarkably, the temple tank has never dried up, even during the most scorching Palakkad summers. In earlier times, it was customary for all devotees and worshipers to take a dip in the temple tank before entering the temple, although this practice has since been discontinued in more recent times.
