This ancient temple is situated on the banks of the Bharathapuzha in Ponnani. This is one of the famous 108 Siva temples in Kerala. The temple is believed to be more than 1500 years old. Legnd has it that it was built by the celestial retinue of Mahadeva in a single night. Astrological findings indicate that the idol is self- originated. In the beginning the temple was seven stories high and it was destroyed during the invasion by Tippu Sultan. On the southern side are Dakshinamoorthy, Unni Ganapathy, Maha Ganapathy and Ayyappan consecrated as subordinate deities. There was a Devi temple on the northern side more of this temple which was completely destroyed. The temple also had a flag post and possessed an elephant on which the deity used to be taken out. A lot of land had been given to the temple by the devotees in ancient times. On the granite stone on the eastern side of the temple are some inscriptions which have not been deciphered so far. Many sculptures are also there. There is a plaque on which it is written that acres of land and property had been donated to the temple by a devotee who was cured of a disease by the blessings of the Lord.
