Narasimhamoorthy Temple Malaparamba

History

The ruins of the Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple (1947-2009) bear witness not only to centuries of turbulent history but also hold a unique place in Kerala's past. They depict the challenges faced by Hindus in this predominantly Muslim-dominated district of Malappuram after gaining independence. In 2009, a temporary place of worship, known as a baalalaya, was erected here, allowing devotees to continue their age-old tradition of worshiping Lord Narasimhamoorthy at this sacred site. The temple grounds were surrounded by the haunting remnants of the struggles faced by Hindus, symbolized by shattered temple columns and broken idols that were once revered not only by the common people more but also by great seers of ancient times. On close inspection, one could even discern the petrified blood drops of a martyr named Ramasimhan within the temple premises, reminding us Hindus of our need for greater self-esteem and courage to defend our heritage. The premises of Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple are perched atop a picturesque hillock named Malaparamba, located 4 km southwest of Angadipuram, near Perinthalmanna in the Malapuram district of Kerala. Astrological calculations suggest that the temple's origins date back nearly 4,000 years. It is believed that due to the exceptional sanctity of this place, numerous sages undertook penance here in ancient times. One such sage is said to have had a divine vision of Lord MahaVishnu in the Narasimha Avataara, inspiring him to initiate the construction of the Narasimha Moorthy temple for the benefit of the general public. Over time, the temple gained renown, attracting devotees from far and wide, even though it endured many challenges in the following centuries. In the centuries that followed, the Brahmanas who had been involved in the temple's affairs experienced a division into Shaiva and Vaishnava sects, leading to sectarian conflicts. These disputes had a detrimental impact on the administration of the Malaparamba Maattummal Narasimha Moorthy Temple, causing its gradual decline and eventual ruin. Subsequently, the temple's management came under the control of the local ruling Kundarackkal family, and it gradually regained its lost glory. Like many other temples in Malabar, this holy Narasimhamoorthy Temple fell victim to widespread looting, desecration, and demolition during Tippu Sultan's brutal Islamic Jihad against the unarmed, peaceful, and submissive Hindu population of Malabar. Most Hindus were either slaughtered or enslaved by Tippu's violent jihadi forces from Mysore, while others were forcibly converted to Islam under the threat of gruesome death. With no one left to care for the temple premises, they were abandoned and soon became engulfed by thick vegetation.
