Tryambakeshwara Temple Trikkannad

History

The Trikkannad Tryambakeshwara Temple proudly graces the Arabian seashore in Thrikkannad, located approximately 1 km from Bekal in the Kasaragod district of Kerala. This temple occupies a distinguished position among the 108 Shiva temples in Kerala and is affectionately known as Dakshina Kashi. The darshanam of Trikannad Trimbakeshwar continues to face east, offering a breathtaking view of the expansive sea. An annual festival showcasing theyyam kaliyattam is celebrated in the temple on the 26th day of the Malayalam month of Kumbham. This shrine stands as one of the most exceptional temples in Kerala dedicated to Tryambakeshwara Shiva. The pratishta, or consecration, of the temple was conducted by Kanva more Maharshi. In historical accounts, the darshanam, or sacred view, of Trikkannad Tryambakeshwara initially faced east. However, as the revered deity Shiva within these sanctified premises assumed a fierce and formidable form (ugramurti), the orientation of the darshan was altered to face west, towards the tranquil waters of the sea, in an effort to placate the deity's wrath. Historically, the Kshetra Thattakam encompassed 30 villages, with the temple originally associated with Chirakkal Kovilakam. Subsequently, its administration came under the stewardship of the Anjuru Achannmar, leaders overseeing 500 Nair families.
