Puraviyil Chamundeswari Devi Temple

History

The Puraviyil Sree Chamundeswary Devi Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Chamundy Devi and is located in Venganoor, Thiruvananthapuram. Chamundi Devi is considered the wrathful form of Durga, but she is also known to be kind to her true devotees. This temple, which is over 650 years old, is situated in Chavadinada, Venganoor, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, approximately 15 kilometers south of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. The temple houses an idol of the goddess Puraviyil Sree Chamundeswari Devi. The term "Puraviyil" means "gifted," and the belief is that the land on which the temple stands was gifted by the Maharaja of Travancore to more the members of his army who had always protected him, for the purpose of building a temple for the Goddess. There are many popular beliefs regarding the origin of this temple. One prominent story revolves around a Karanavar from a well-known Tharavad (ancestral home) in the area. He embarked on a pilgrimage to visit various temples in Kolathunadu to study the science of divinity. During his stay in Kolathunadu, he worshipped a Devi deity in a temple there. He was a devout believer in that particular temple, and his deep devotion and dedication to the deity became well-known in the area. It is said that one day, the Devi appeared in his dream and expressed her appreciation for his devotion and dedication. She promised to accompany him back to his native place. Following his inner conviction, he brought the power of the Goddess in a pot (kalasam) and joyfully returned to his Tharavad in Venganoor. He placed the pot in a nearby Sarpakav and began worshipping the Devi. Later, the pot was moved to a Kottiyambalam, where regular pujas were conducted. Eventually, a small temple with a thatched roof was constructed. Later, this thatched roof temple was rebuilt with a permanent tiled roof. The present temple was constructed eighteen years ago. The temple is also believed to be associated with Venganoor Pillai, one of the members of the Ettuveettil Pillamar, thus having a connection with the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. The Goddess in this temple is believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Parvathi, the consort of Lord Shiva. Every year, a large number of devotees visit this temple, firmly believing that the Goddess fulfills their desires and aspirations. In the Malayalam month of Midhunum, on Uthramnakshatram, the annual Prathista Dhivasam is celebrated, and thousands of devotees attend the pujas during this occasion.
