Vellimuttam Sree Dharmasastha Temple

History

Vellimuttam Sree Dharmasastha served as the ancestral deity (Bharadevatha) for the renowned Pazhoor Mana family. Due to their birth ties with Lord Ayyappa, the Vadakkillam family members were prohibited from entering Sabarimala for darshan. Instead, they revered Vellimuttam Sree Dharmasastha. It is believed that this temple shares the same age as the Sabarimala Temple. The Pokkanaril family, who ruled the 'Chennam Pallippuram Kara' at that time, assumed responsibility for the temple administration, taking it away from Pazhoor Mana. Lord Sastha, a formidable warrior skilled in combat, known for slaying Mahishi and defeating Vavar, was worshipped by the Pokkanaril family as the 'Kara Nathan' (Lord of the Countryside). more They themselves had a kalari (a place where martial arts were taught), with remnants of this kalari still visible nearby the temple. According to the elderly generation, the temple once boasted facilities like a 'Bhojanasala' and 'Kulippura.' However, like many other Hindu temples, this temple too faced oppression. Eventually, the temple's administration was entrusted to Brahmani Parambathu Krishnakurup, the head of the family, who then handed it over to the NSS karayogam (No. 817) at that time. This karayogam was later split into two, forming another (No. 4454), and now both karayogams jointly oversee the temple's administration.
