Kaprassery Sreekrishna Swamy Temple

History

Kaprassery Sreekrishna Swamy Temple is situated in the Chengamanad Panchayat of Ernakulam District of Kerala, just 3 km to the south west of the Nedumbassery International Airport. There is a legend about the construction of the temple as it exists today. When Veluthambi Dalava was the Diwan of the Travancore State, a Christian businessman, Mathew Tharakan earned the displeasure of the King and was banished from the state. He came to the Kaprassery temple and lived there in the guise of a Brahmin. He became a great devotee of the Lord, praying to him intensely as long as he lived there. Later when he was more exonerated, he had this present structure of the temple built as an offering to the Lord. The Lord is consecrated here as Santhanagopalakrishnan. There are no other deities consecrated in this temple. Devotees come from far and wide, seeking the blessings of the Lord for begetting children and for the prosperity of the family. The annual eight-day festival of the temple starts on star Chothi in the month of Kumbham (second half of February and first half of March) and end with Aarattu (holy bath of the deity by immersion) on the day of star Thiruvonam. Ashtami Rohini is another important occasion celebrated in the temple. People talk of many devotees who were blessed with all prosperity after they had worshipped the Lord at midnight when the Sanctum Sanctorum is opened for worship on this special occasion. Devotees also firmly believe that girls who listen to the discourse on Rukmini Swayamvaram (marriage of Rukmini, consort of Sree Krishna) during the Bhaagavatha Sapthaham (reciting the Bhagavatham with dis- courses on it for a period of seven days) and take part in the procession carrying the idol of Rukmini, will get married within a period of one year. The main offering to the Lord here is Paal Payasam (a sweet preparation with rice, milk and sugar) and Vella Nivedyam (rice). From 1971 onwards, the temple is managed by a committee elected from the people of this area. Chief Priest of the temple belongs to Nedumbilly Tharananallur Mana.
