Panmana Major Sree Subramahnya Temple

History

This is one of the most important temples and has gained fame as the Palani of Kerala. As the temple has been mentioned in Unnineeli Sandesham it can be assumed that it was in existence before the 13th century when the poem was written. It is believed that when the Portuguese forces came to attack the temple at Thevelakkara, the Nambudiri who was staying at Anchumanakkal took the idol of his beloved Lord Subrahmanya and jumped into the ocean. Years later the idol was discovered from the sea. The local people then constructed a temple at the place where the present temple stands. While more the temple was under construction, the idol was kept under a Banyan tree on the northern side of the structure. Shankaran Thampi who was the manager of the Travancore palace and had been adopted into the royal family, was a devotee of Lord Subrahmanya and he renovated the temple.
