Uliyanoor Sree Mahadeva Temple

History

Lord Mahadeva is consecrated in a round sanctum facing the Periyar river in the east. The sanctum is huge with a circumference of 42 meters and bears the grandeur associated with the work of Perunthachan, the Master Architect of ancient Kerala. The ceiling has rafters representing the 64 art forms and the four Vedas. The Namaskara mandapa also is huge and magnificent. Nandi is made of a single stone and is as big as a live bull. Sree Parvathy Devi is consecrated in the same sanctum facing west. Annapoorneswari devi is consecrated as the subordinate deity. Madathilappan temple established by Lord Parasurama is close to the temple. more The very powerful Ganapathy is consecrated in an opening to the south on the southern gate of this temple. All these are part of the Uliyanoor Mahadeva temple. Legend has that Perunthachan found it impossible to arrange all the rafters around the central point at the top. As he prayed for long to Mahadeva for guidance, a voice was heard from the sanctum asking him to reduce the length to make it possible.
