Illathappan Kavu Temple

History

Illathappan Kavu is a rare temple in Kerala, where the deity is Sree Chakra. It is situated in Kanjirapally Taluk at Tamabalakkad Village in Kottayam Dist. This temple belongs to the ancient family of 'Kallaraveli Illam There is another famous temple where the main deity is Bhadrakali, consecrated on rock and Sree Dharmasatha. There is another temple of Mahadeva in the village which was consecrated by 'Sree Naranathu Branthan'. The other important deities are Ganapathi, Siva, Subramaniyan, and the presence of Krishna are the speciality of this temple. Rakshus, Malamoorthi, Gulikan known as 'Ramachar' and Naga prathishta are also seen in the temple. This more is a very rare temple of Sree Mahashastavu. One who depended upon the Illam was a devotee named Sankaran and it was he who called the Lord by the name 'Illathappan'. He used to say that Illathappan had saved him from many accidents. It is this firm faith that has made the temple famous and well known as "Illathappan Kavu". There is also the Presence of Devi in this temple. In the year 2004 a 'Deva Prashna' was conducted in the temple and it was decided that a 'Sree Chakram' should be installed in the temple. Pooja should be performed to Illathappan and Sree Chakram giving equal importance to both. Accordingly, the Sree Chakram was installed in the Sree Kovil of Illathappan. Various offerings are conducted in the temple like Sree chakrapooja for prosperity and 'Pidipanam' for wealth, Alankarapooja for the fulfilment of desires. For more information: Bhuvaneswary -According to 'Deva Prashna' Godess Bhuvaneswary has been provided with special place of worship, the work of which is in progress. Important Offerings - Sree Chakra Pooja: It is performed according to the tradition of Kerala with Special 'Nivedyam' and 'Archana'. This pooja is done for the wellbeing of the family. Oushada Pooja: This pooja is performed for Amritavahi' Illathappan every Saturday. Sugar, Honey, Ghee Kadali, plantains and other medicines are used as 'Nivedya'. This is taken by devotees for the removal of various illness. This 'Oushada' pooja has to be booked early. Pournami Pooja This is an important pooja performed for Sree Chakra. This has to be booked in advance.Other offerings - Illathappan Niranjanam & Tilapayasam, Neipayasam, Kalabhabhishekam, Niramala for Shani Dosham. Sree Chakram Alankara Pooja, Kadali Nivedyam, Kumkuma Archana, Nei vilakku, Palpayasam Pidipanam, Poomoodal. The temple administration is carried on by Sree Chakra Charitable Trust. 40% of the income of the temple is being utilised for the welfare of the people living in that village. 'Gnana Seva Ratna Award' is being given to eminent persons in spiritual and cultural field. The first such award was given to Brahamasree Malliyoor Sankaran Namboodiri. The Route to the temple-Those who travel by train may get down at Kottayam and proceed via Kumili (NH 220) by getting down at Kanjirapally and travel to Kurissukavala from here.  It is 5 kms to Illathappan Kavu. Those who come from Northern Kerala can travel via Thrissur Moovattupuzha and get down at Pala. Illathappan Kavu is 6 kms from Pala on Ponkunnam route. Those who come from South can travel along Pathanamthitta, Ranni route, Mavelikkara, Changanassery via Karukachal and can reach Kanjirapally. On Pala Ponkunnam route, get down at Manjakuzhi Junction, from there it is just 6 Kms to reach this famous temple.
