Edavattom Kutikkattu Devi temple

History

The puranas – ancient legends say that Bhadrakali (Mother goddess as a Chastising Deity) whose violent anger was blazing even after she killed Darika, was prevented by her father Lord Parameswara, who lay on the road she came rushing along. It is that rare image of the goddess with her feet held high to stamp upon. But seeing her father she calmed down. It is this image of the goddess in that rate moment that is the idol of this temple. Though this is the outward appearance, the bhava, the emotion expressed is that of the merciful, all protective, all-powerful mother who showers blessings on more and confers prosperity to the devotees. This temple is a blessing that Moolavattom village attained by some holy deed of the previous births. The Devaprasna (the sacred astrological consultations) revealed that Devi who has no beginning and end chose this spot after passing through many places, A long, long time ago, this place where the temple now stands was a wood teeming with bushes and black palms. Two old women who came to collect fire-wood saw two lighted stone lamps. They passed the news and the local people and their leaders made astrological consultations which revealed the divine powerful presence of Sree Bhadrakaali, worshipped by hundred and twenty-seven powerful deities. The light of the lamp was emanating her powerful presence. The platform on which a stone-lamp was built was the first centre of worship, which over the ages was built into this temple by the hard work of the local people. The blessings of Devi- Numberless people have given testimony to the fact that Devi grants the requests of the ardent devotees. She solves the problems people come across in their daily life – obstacles to marriages, employment, persecution by enemies, financial problems, the sorrows of the childless. It is the selfless continuous hard work of Surendranachan, the oracle who has been here for the last forty-five years, that contributes to the fame and prosperity of this temple. The Final Offer of Results - No matter however much science develops, no matter the world becomes a global village, and the IT magic goes on to higher and higher planes, there can be no unraveling of some cosmic mysteries. No science can ever find our relation between individual and society. We cannot write off all that science cannot prove. The present generation has become fully aware of this. What our human eyes and ears cannot witness takes place in the world of nature. All this is in the ruling hands of Mother Goddess who is the deity of this temple. Surrender yourself and all your problems which have no human solution and pray will all your heart and soul. Devi will appear before you, as the blessings she showers upon you.The mother goddess of Kuttikat Temple is believed to the goddess of Valliyankavu. All the Pujas done here will be blessed by that deity. It is prayed that all the pujas and other prayers conducted here such as the reciting of Lalitha Sahasra Naama will have its efficacious effect in families, society and the nation at large. May the Devi the all-powerful and the one who contains the entire cosmos within bless each and every one of you, Karimkuttiyaan - A deity is supposed to be doing everything for this Mother Goddess. A special kind of sacrifice is offered here Kotheswari - A goddess Kotheswary and another 21 goddesses are supposed to give all support to the main goddess. They are offered some kind of crude sacrifices which cannot be done within the temple precincts. Therefore, is performed in some houses in Meenam in the Malayalam era before the astral sign ‘Aswathy’, Black Palm - It is supposed that the divine energy of the wood-deity, Valliyankaavil came and manifested itself as a stone-lamp under the Black Palm which is cherished as most scared. Women who are mentally disturbed get cured after performing some rites under this Black Palm. Brahma Rakshas: The Brahminic spirit of the first temple priest, At the time the temple came into being it was a Brahmin called Mayankutty who used to perform the Pujas. The Goddess always responded to this sage the man calls and was present where he was. He died without successors and the local people took up the responsibility. Such people became oracles. During those days there was no daily Pooja. Pooja was performed on the first day of every Malayalam month, in the month of Meenam on the day of the astral sign of Aswathy and on the tenth of the Malayalam month Medam. Later Pooja began to be conducted on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. Once the idol was installed daily Pooja was begun. When there was no daily Pooja the spirit of the Brahmin Mayankutty was made to abide in the Narasimhaswami temple. A plot of land was given to that temple for the poojas for this spirit. Before the temple festival at Kuttikkat, offers are made at this temple and the flower and other offerings brought from there are placed at the inner temple threshold. This custom is observed even today.
