Divinity in its rarity is consecrated at this
ancient temple and it enjoys a supreme position among the temples of Central
Travancore. The temple is millennium old and its sanctorum with Garbhagraham is
constructed in a square shape along with Namaskara mandap, Chuttambalam,
circum- ambulatory, flag mast, minor temples, aannakottil etc. The temple has a
square-shaped sanctum sanctorum (Sreekovil) with 'Nalambalam' and
'Balikkalpura'. The divine presence of 'Ashtadikpalakas' can be seen on the
upper dome of the 'Balikkalpura'. The 'Balikkallu' itself is sculpted
beautifully. All these are carved on the same stone from the foundation stone

'Mukhamandap' is a sopanam with 'dwarapalakar,' which also adds to the beauty of the
temple. The square-shaped sreekovil is also covered with a bronze plate. Inside
the 'sreekovil', the 'Girbhagriha' is circular. Altogether the temple is quite
beautiful to look at. The new moon day of the month of 'Karkidakam' has special
significance at the temple. While visiting the temple, Vilwamangalam Swamiyar
opined that the idol represents God as revealed to 'Vasudevar' and 'Devaki'
where his "avatar" as Krishna in Bhoj Raja's Madhurapuri. He also
opined that the "Nagaraja' idol of the temple represents 'Anandan' who
accompanied Vasudevar to Ambady when he took the child Krishna on that divine
day of 'Ashtami Rohini' realizing the importance of the temple Vilwamangalam
swamiyar paid tributes to the dead (Balitharpanam) on the Karkidakavavu day at
the temple pond. While he was performing vavu pooja, the lord appeared before
him and blessed that the dead and gone relatives (pitrukkal) of all the
devotees who pay vavu bali tributes here would attain Vishnupadam' (Moksha at
the feet of Lord Vishnu), hence the popularity of 'Vavu bali' here.
Balitharpanam are also conducted on new moon days of all Malayalam month.
