This famous Maha Vishnu temple is at
Thrikkodithaanam in Kottayam district. This is one of the 108 Vishnu temples in
Kerala and also one among the 13 Malaynadu Thirupathy temples. The deity here
is believed to have been worshipped by Sahadeva, one among the Pandavas. Legend
says that Sahadeva decided to commit suicide as he alone did not have an idol
of Maha Vishnu to worship. This idol was got from the fire that he had lighted
to end his life. Hence the Lord here is known as Albhutha Narayanan. The idol
is that of the Lord with four hands. There is the consecration
more
of Narasimha Moorthy
also with equal importance. It is also believed to be the place where Lord
Vishnu appeared before Shankaracharya as well as before King Rugmangada. At one
time Thrikotithaanam was the capital of Nantuzhai nadu. But when the royal rule
came to an end, all the landed property on which the temple depended for
revenue were lost. The temple is under the Devaswom Board now.
