The Kondamarugu SreePorkali temple is situated in Methiri village of Ramapuram Panchayath in Kottayam district. It is believed that this temple is about 1500 years old. People believe, that the forefathers of "Kondamarugu and Chagharhasseri Illom along with the Marar of 'Kuduka Tharavad went visiting temples and during their pilgrimage visited Mookambika temple. In the 'Ambika Vanam' of Kudajadri they had a vision of Mookambika. According to legend the Namboodiri of Kondamarugu Illom prayed to Devi Mookambika that to save his village and family she should be present in the area of his "Illom". The Devi accepted his prayer and appeared in his Illom more and the members of his family worshipped the Devi. Even today she is blessing thousands of people and the temple is a famous pilgrimage centre. There are other Upadevatas in the temple like Raktachamundi, Rakteswari, Bhairavan, Sreevidya, Yakshi, Chathanmar, Sarpam and daily pooja is performed for the Upadevatas. During Navarathri there is "Navakam" and "Panchagavyam". The famous "Kalam Pattu" is conducted during Mandala Kalam and during this time there is Desaguruthi for 41 days. During Vishu and Vishu Sangramam, Deshaguruthi is performed. These are the auspicious days of the temple. The important offerings of the temple are 'Chuttuvilakku', 'Aru Nazhi', Kaivettaka Guruthi, Karinguruthi, Vilakku Maala and Pushpanjali'. Near this temple there is the Shatrughna Swami temple which belongs to the set of temples icluded in the Nalambalam darshanam . (four temples to be visited on the same day). In the presence of Sree Porkali Devi the Namboodiris of Kondamarugu perform Mantrika and Tantrika rites. People from all parts of Kerala and other states also approach this Illom for the solution of their problems. The poojas and mantrika rites are performed by Neelakandan Namboodiri, Padmanabhan Namboodiri, Subramanyan Namboodiri, Vishnu Namboodiri and Narayanan Namboodiri. Among the various temples of Porkali Devi, this Devi temple is said to be very auspicious blessing people with prosperity and destroying enemies.
