There is a legendary story that during the winter month of ‘Vrichika’ a divine person came to Karangattussery. He spent time meditating there, he was a Brahmin who finally got married to a beautiful girl living in that village and settled down to a peaceful life. He was a ‘bhakta’ who worshipped Lord Shiva, Sree Durga Devi and Sree Bhadrakali and performed pooja for these deities with great concentration and Bhakti. He was trying his best to bring prosperity and all kinds of welfare to the people of the village. But in the meantime, he became sick and died all of a sudden. After that the lamps of the temple were not lighted due to scarcity of oil. About 400 years ago this place was flooded by the sea water. Later when the water receded, after 100 years the shore became visible and the people recognised the existence of Munnodi Devasthanam. They started lighting lamps there. But very strong winds blowing from the sea used to put off these lamps, so to protect it they used palm leaves as barricade. A christian lady who lived on the North-Western side of the temple is said to have seen the Munnodi grandfather in the form of a cow. Later the people got an idol from the sea which they installed in the Munnodi Devasthanam as Munnodi Appuppan. The first temple was constructed with palm leaves and they started with the worship and installation of Bhadrakalai. With the blessings of the divine Mother, families of the place became prosperous. The temple and village became famous. Thus, the temple came under the protection and rule of the people. Every year during the temple festival ‘Talapoli’ and offerings were conducted at the Munnodi Devasthanam. There is a legend behind the Sree Munnodi Durga Bhadrakali temple. It is said that in the month of Kumbha during the Pooram star a great devotee of the Devi Sree Kumaran had a vision of the Devi on the shores of the sea. He stood spell-bound looking at the Devi adorned with gold ornaments. Both the Devis told him to install them at Kanjiramchira as Durga and Bhadrakali. The vision was so powerful that he could not move. After that he saw two idols very near him and without delay he got the idols installed at Kanjirachira during the star Pooram. The temple became famous and lots of devotees started visiting the holy place. The Sree Munnodi Devasthanam was previously known as the temple of Munnodi Appuppan. Seven years ago, an ‘Astamangala Prasnam’ was conducted under the guidance of Trikkunnapuzha Udayakumar. So, he said that a separate shrine should be constructed for Appuppan who used to take care of all rituals of the temple in the past. So, in the new temple, a place was set aside for ‘Munnodi Appuppan’. There are separate Sree Kovils for Durga Devi and Bhadrakali. The idols of Sree Durga Devi and Bhadrakali have been carved out of ‘Krishna Shila’. There are two separate flag posts made of brass. The Sree Kovil is golden in colour and in front of it there is a Namaskara Mandapam made of marble. The lamps are carved out of teak. Anndanam is conducted daily in the temple. Every 1st day of the Malayalam month, there is ‘Sarvaishwarya Pooja’ for prosperity. Other offerings like Bhagawathy Seva and lighting of lemon lamps during the star ‘Pooram’ etc. From the Alapuzha KSRTC bus stand, 2 kms near seashore is the exact location of Sree Munnodi Devasthanam. From the Alappuzha railway station, it is only 1½ kilometers to reach this famous temple.
