Mattannur Pariyaram Subrahmanya Temple

History

The ancient Shri Subrahmbanya-Shri Vishnu Temple is situated in Mattanur - Pariyaram, within the district of Kannur, Kerala. This sacred sanctuary boasts a rich heritage of classical mural paintings that bear a striking resemblance to the renowned Ajanta paintings. Eminent figures such as the archaeologist Shri K. K. Muhammed (former Director, ASI), the late Shri. K. K. Warrier (Mural Expert), K. K. Marar (Artist), and M. G. Sasibhooshan (Historian) have unequivocally authenticated the temple's age, which traces back to an enigmatic point in history. The artistic style employed in the mural paintings adorning this ancient temple stands in stark contrast to the traditional mural paintings of Kerala, more while still sharing remarkable affinities with the Ajanta mural style. This temple occupies a significant place within Indian history, serving as an everlasting vessel for recollecting and reconnecting with forgotten historical moments.Historically, this temple has ties to the Mooshika Vamsa and has been passed down through the Kottayam Kingdom (Chirakkal). At present, the temple committee and the Pariyarathappan Kshetra Chaitanyarjava Paripalana Sabha Charitable Trust bear the responsibility for the temple's upkeep, diligently striving for its preservation and restoration. We deeply appreciate your support and assistance, and we remain indebted to you for your sincere contributions.
