Perathrikkovu Poothrikkovu Devaswam

History

Perathrikkovu, Thechikkottukavu and Poothrikkovu are the three important temples of Peramangalam, situated about 9.5 km away from the Trichur- Guruvayur State Highway. All three temples come under Perathrikkovu Thechikkottukavu Poothrikkovu Devaswam. Perathrikkovu is about 1400 years old. Lord Rama, as he returned after killing Ravana, is consecrated here. The place where the temple is situated used to be called Veeramangalam which became Peramangalam through usage. The main festival is celebrated in the month of Vrischikam. Karkadakam is celebrated as Ramayana Month with great fervor in the temple. Annadanam is conducted throughout the month and more than thousand people take part in it every day. Thechikkottukavu is more one of the most famous temples in Kerala. Goddess Parasakthi is consecrated here as Durga and Kali. Before Goddess Kali set off for destroying the demon, Darikan, Goddess Durga is believed to have advised the mantram in her right ear. The idol is self-originated. The place where the temple stands now used to be a forest of Kanjiram (Nux vomica) trees. One woman who had come to cut grass from the place sharpened her sickle on a stone and the stone started bleeding. The frightened woman left the place after covering the stone with her basket. On astrological consultations it was found that the stone carried the power of Goddess Durga and another stone nearby carried the power of Goddess Bhadrakali. Then both the Goddesses were consecrated and the temple was built there. The rituals practiced here are for Goddess Durga and the celebrations are for Goddess Kali. On the first Tuesday of every Malayalam month ‘Karyasadya pooja’ is conducted for Goddess Durga and every first Friday ‘Aiswarya pooja’ is conducted for Goddess Bhadrakali. The most important celebration for Goddess Durga is on Star Karthika in the month of Vrischikam. The Pooram and Vela celebrated in the month of Makaram is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali. Offering ‘Para’, which starts 17 days before the Pooram, is a very important offering to Goddess Bhadrakali. ‘Ponkalayidal’ is held on the day of Kumbhasamkramam. ‘Kolam Vechu Thozhal’on that day is considered to be very auspicious. Poothrikovu Temple is situated on the northern side of Thechikkottukavu, in the same compound. Lord Siva is consecrated here. The most important festival is on Sivarathri. ‘Thechikkottukavu Ramachandran’ the tallest and most majestic elephants used for festivals in Kerala belonged to this Devaswam.
