Kallil Bhagavathy Temple

History

This ancient cave temple is situated at Methala in Kunnathunadu Taluk in Ernakulam District. The Bhagavathy is consecrated in a cave beneath a huge rock that stands without any support on the ground. It measures 75 feet in length, 45 feet in width and 25 feet in height. Archaeological studies show that the temple may date back to the 3 rd century BC. This is considered as one of the ancient Jain temples in Kerala. The presence of rock carvings of Vardhamaana Mahaveer, Paarshwanadhan and Padmavathi Devi adds credence to this belief. Bhagavathy is seated slightly to the right of the door. The presence of more the Balikkallu in front of the sanctum, the stone roofed elephant shed, steps made of stones, and the temple pond and oottupura made of stone show why it is called the Kallil Bhagavathy Temple. (Kallu in Malayalam is stone). There is a legend that connects the temple with a beautiful woman who was seen in that place once. She was playing with stones and when she noticed the people there she disappeared. The stone that she had thrown up remained there and the small stone that had fallen down became the idol of the goddess.
