Anchumukku Devi Temple

History

In the beginning, centuries ago there used to be a festival of seven days ending on the day of star Bharani in the Malayalam month of Meenam. This was conducted in a temporary shed made of green coconut fronds. Later Goddess Bhadrakali was consecrated as the main deity and Ganapathy, Nagas and Braharakshas as subordinate deities in a permanent temple. The main deity faces east but devotees can worship the goddess from the northern side also. Such a temple construction is very rare in Kerala. The Anchumukku vayal and the surrounding areas were an agricultural village. The sword and the spear of the Goddess used more to be kept at the Kunnuvila temple after the festival. But as the owners of the temple refused to continue the practice, the same were kept in the Chittalloor temple. But in 1965 the Goddess revealed Her desire through the main priest to be consecrated at the place where the temple stands today. First a new sword and spear were made to invoke the effulgence of the Goddess into it. But as seen in the astrological consultation a stone idol was made and consecrated at the temple. At first there used to be a puja in the evening on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Later it became three pujas every day. In 1983 the Nair Karayogam that had been responsible for the running of the temple handed over the management to a committee of the devotees. The temple was renovated in the year 2000.
