Purandareswarath Sree Mahadeva Temple, located
about a kilometer east 52 of Thuravoor junction is the only Siva temple in the
Thuravoor village. The God Sree Mahadeva here is believed to be as 'Sarabha
Murthy'. It was the incarnation of Lord Sarabha that mellowed Lord Vishnu's
fierce form of Narasimha. Hence there is a primordial relation between
Purandareswarath temple and the Narasimhamoorthy temple at Thuravoor. Sree
Purandare- swara is the only Siva deity in the 'Kootti Ezhunnallathu' at
Thuravoor temple on the Deepavali day. Legend says that a holy Brahmin bound
for Vaikkom, could only reach Purandareswarath temple on the Vaikkath- ashtami
day. Heartbroken at being unable
more
to have Ashtami Darshan, he prayed to Lord
Siva and the lord appeared himself before him. Vilwamangalath Swamiyar later
identified the presence of lord Siva here and enshrined the Lord here. The Lord
was worshipped by the Brahmins living in the area and the ownership of the
temple was bestowed on 'Puthanchira Mekkali Mana of Thrissur'. In April 1977,
the temple administration was handed over to the Valamangalam North NSS
Karayogam No.759. The Upadevathas of the temple include Nandikeswran in front
of the Sanctum Sanctorum, Ganapathy on the right side of the Sree Kovil,
Kannadi Prathishtas of Lord Sastha, Durga Devi, Vellam Bhagavathy, and
Anthimahakaalan in a special shrine outside the Valiyambalam,
Nagaraja-Nagayakshi-Sarpa prathishtas outside the temple compound Yakshiamma on
the centre back position of Mahadeva and Brahmarakshassu. The main festival of
the temple is the Mahasivarathri in the month of Kumbham of the Malayalam era.
The Kodiyettam is conducted 8 days before this. Under the leadership of
Tharananalloor and Tanniyil Mathiyathu Mana Namboodiris all specified rituals
are conducted for the rejuvenation of Lord Mahadeva. AfterKodiyettu, Kodiyettu
Sadya is conducted every year. Sreebhoothabali is conducted every day during
the festival. The temple can be reached by turning to the east at Thuravoor
Junction (to the right on ALP-EKM route and to the left on EKM-ALP route) It is
1.3 KM away on the proposed Thuravoor - Pampa Road. The nearest railway station
is Thravoor on the EKM-ALP route.
