Thamaramkulangara Dharma Sastha Temple

History

Devotees regard this temple as an extension of the renowned Sastha Temple at Chamravattom (Malappuram District). According to legends, Lord Sastha of Chamravattom followed one of his priests from Morakkala Mana who had relocated to Tripunithura. Lord Sastha assumed the form of a lizard and comfortably accompanied the priest by sitting on his traditional umbrella made of palm leaves. Thamaramkulangara Sree Dharmasastha is considered the incarnation of Lord Danwanthari, making it the sole temple in Tripunithura where Dharmasastha is the main deity. In addition to Dharmasastha, devotees also worship Lord Ganesha, Bhadrakali, Nagaraja, and Brahmasrakshas. Upon entering the temple premises, a massive banyan tree greets you, creating a more pleasant breeze with its shimmering silvery leaves. A well-maintained freshwater pond covers more than one-third of the total temple area. A Nadappura with a traditional flag post enhances the temple's architectural beauty. Presently, Brahmasri Sreejith Narayanan performs the rituals as the Melsanthi, while the Chief Priest (Thanthri) of the temple is Brahmasri Puliyannur Rahul Narayanan Nambuthirippad. Although the temple is owned by the Uranma Devaswom Board, day-to-day affairs are overseen by the Thamaramkulangara Ayyappa Seva Samithy (TASS), a voluntary organization led by local residents. Ayyappa Seva Samithy strives to promote temple culture by organizing frequent cultural events within the temple precincts, such as dance performances, Bhajan Sandhya, Chakkyar Koothu, music concerts, and temple art forms. They are dedicated to using festive occasions not only for promoting temple arts but also for nurturing a culture of devotion among the people. Esteemed artists like Guru Ammannur Madhava Chakyar (Koothu, Koodiyaattom), Keezhpadam Kumaran Nair (Kathakali), Thrithala Kunjikrishna Poduval (Thayambaka), and Sri Chottanikkara Narayana Marar (Panchavadyam) have significantly contributed to making the temple festivals vibrant and timeless. The captivating moments presented by these artists still remain vivid in the hearts of art enthusiasts.
