Kangazha Mahadeva Temple

History

Kangazha Mahadeva Temple is situated at Kangazha, a village on the eastern border of Changanacherry Thaluk. The main consecration, the self-formed idol of Mahadeva faces the west. The Lord is consecrated as Mahadeva after the loss of Sathidevi in the Daksha yaga. The roof of the circular sanctum sanctorum is paved with copper plates. Ganapathy is consecrated on the south western side of the sanctum sanctorum.  Outside, in the temple compound are consecrated Sree Dharma Shasthavu, Nagaraja, three idols of Rakshas as Yogiswara, Durga devi, Yakshiyamma, and Nagas and Serpents in the form of Chithrakoodam. Outside the temple walls are the Nagathara, Aarattukulam on the eastern side, a more huge banyan tree on the western side and the Vettayaal about a hundred meters away. The other structures of this ancient temple, which has been renovated recently, include the outer structure, the Anakottil and the Mandapam roofed with tiles. Nagaraja has been consecrated in the Shaiva form inside a sanctum sanctorum with pujas being offered every day.  Noorum palum is offered on all days of star Aayilyam except for the one that comes in the month of Thulam. There are no documents to prove the antiquity of the temple. But legends say that Kangazha was the place where the great Rishi Kanwa performed penance. It is believed that the self-originated form of Mahadeva that Sage Kanwa worshipped is the one that is now in the temple. The annual festival is in the month of Kumbham, beginning on the day of star Moolam and lasting for eight days. Shivarathri is celebrated with fervor. Mandalam is celebrated as a festival with the first twelve days of Vrichikam being specially observed with Vilakku and Pushpabhishekam. For the last 63 years the temple has organized Sapthaham which would end on the day of Ashtamirohini. The main offerings of this temple include Jaladhara, Thirumadhuram, Katum payasam, Koottu payasam, Arunazhi payasam, Pal payasam, Vella nivedyam etc. The temple was owned by the Padappa Mana of Angamaly. Later it was entrusted with some of the important families in Kangazha.  In 1956 the management of the temple came to the branch of the Ayyappa Seva Sangham (Branch No.147). The Paravoor Illam has the Thanthric rights in this temple. The Vivekananda Vidya Mandir is working under the Kangazha Devaswam with affiliation to the Bharatheeya Vidya Nikethan.  The temple also runs Sree Mahadeva Kshethra Kala Peedam to give training to children in musical instruments.
