Pallippurathukavu Bhagavathy Temple is situated
at Kodimatha, Kottayam. It is a Bhadrakali Temple. The custodians of the temple
are the Kottarathil Unnis whose residence is adjacent to the temple. Their
original home was in Amayannoor, a village thirteen Kilometers to the east of
Kottayam town. In the 4th century of the Malabar Era a member of that family
went to Sree Porkali to offer worship to the Goddess there. One night, two or
three years after he started his pious worship this devotee had a vision of the
Goddess. While he was in state of trance, the Goddess appeared before him and
said "I am
more
extremely pleased by your firm faith in me and your fervent
prayers. There is no need of your continued stay here. You may take this
Nandakam Sword and return home. Keep this word and offer your pious prayer and
worship to it as to me. All your prayer and wishes would be fulfilled".
When he opened his eye, he saw a Nandakam Sword just in front of him. Quite
convinced that it was command of the Goddess and in obedience to her, he took
up the scared sword and re- turned home. On his way he visited the famous
Kumaranalloor Devi Temple and met the Brahmin Priest and owners of the temple.
He requested them to grant him a suitable place to install the sword and to
offer daily Poojas to it. There was a small kottaram belonging to Kumaranalloor
temple at Kodimatha which the trustees allowed him to use for the pur- pose and
he started his daily Poojas after installing the sword there. From that time he
took up his residence in the same building and thus known as the first
Kottarathil Unni. The important offerings are Garudanthookam, Udayasthamana
Pooja, Theeyattu, Chuttu Vilakku, Valiya Vilakku, Thulabharam, Adima Kidathal,
Kumabjakutam etc.
