Sree Chamundeswary Temple which is one of the many ancient shrines in the suburbs of the temple town of Guruvayoor is situated at a distance of about 1 km north of the renowned Sree Krishna temple of Guruvayoor and just ½ km east to the Mahadeva Temple of Mammiyur. The presiding deity of this temple is Goddess Chamundeswary. Along with Goddess Chamundeswary, the sub-deities Veerabhadra Swami, Sree Ayyappa Swami, Vishnumaya, Brahmarakshas and Serpent Gods also have been installed in the temple. The thanthri of the temple is Pottakkuzhy Narayanan Namboothiri who now serves as the chief priest (melsanthi) of the great Sree Krishna Temple of Guruvayoor and an
more authentic teacher of the Vedas. According to traditional concept Goddess Chamundeswary represents the fierce nature of eternal Mother Goddess (Parasakthi). She took her origin from the Divine power of Sree Parvathy with the mission of annihilating the two terrible demons Chanda and Munda who devastated the three worlds. However, Goddess seated in this temple is of mild nature and blesses all those people who dedicate themselves at her feet. She is the perennial source of mercy. Guruvayoor Sree Chamundeswary temple is very prominent and significant because temples dedicated to Goddess Chamundeswary are very rare in Kerala. The annual temple festival falls every year on the first Friday of the Malayalam month of Kumbham. It is a popular local festival with grand fireworks, folk arts etc. and attracts people from far and near irrespective of cast, creed or religion. In addition to the regular daily poojas and other special offerings such as Vishnumayakkalam, Bhagavathy Song and Serpent Song are conducted for propitiating the deities. Mangalya Pooja which facilitates to get perfect bride-groom and to eliminate other harms like chavudosham is performed every day in this temple by the direction of the thanthri. Other important offerings are Udayasthamana Pooja, Chuttuvilakku, Special Pooja for one day etc.
