When Cheraman Perumal was ruling over Kerala, he started construction of a temple at Udayanapuram to install Goddess Durga. He also started the work on another temple to consecrate Subrahmanya. At this time the nose ring of the Devi idol at the Mennakshi temple at Madurai was found missing. The suspicion fell on the priest and the King ordered that he should find the nose ring within 41 days or face death. The terrified priest was innocent but he could take refuge only in the Goddess. On the night of the 40 th day as he slept on the doorstep of the temple Devi appeared
more before him in a dream and asked him to follow the light. The light led him to a place far away where a temple was under construction. The effulgence entered the sanctum at a time that was best suited for consecration. Then a voice was heard saying ‘kumaaranalla ooril (this place was not for Kumaran). This made the place become known as Kumaralalloor. Perumal consecrated the idol of Kumaran (Subrahmanyan) at Udayanapuram. Later Perumal retrieved the idol of the Goddess from the water at Vedagiri. This was the idol that had been worshipped by Maharshi Parasurama. At the time of consecration, a Brahmin whom no one knew entered the sanctum and fixed the idol there and disappeared. People believe that it was Parashurama who made the consecration. The priest who came from Maduai was made the priest at this temple.
