Ramapuram Devi Temple

History

Several centuries ago, the present location of the temple was a sacred Mangrove [Kavu], according to the old timers. There were three separate sacred mangroves [Kavukal], namely Malakavu, Guruthikavu, and Pulakavu. The current temple is situated at the location of Malakkavu, with Guruthikavu to the north and Pulakkavu to the southwest part of the temple. The temple's construction is assumed to have taken place around the 11th century CE. It was related to the coronation ceremony [Kereeda dharanam] at the Odanadu Palace, Kandiyoor Mattom. One day, two Tamil Chettipillai were carrying ornaments and vessels for the coronation ceremony of the more then young king. They were on their way to Kandiyoor Mattom palace through Bhandarappallil Thodu near Ramapuram when night fell, and they decided to rest for the day. They spotted a lamp in the woods, which was the Kaavu of the present temple site. Mistaking it for a house or inn, they reached there. To their surprise, they found an old woman beneath a peepal tree close to the altar. The old lady invited them to stay safely for the night without any fear, claiming to be a relative of the Thampuran of the palace where the Chettipillais were headed. However, she was homeless and used to live in that place. As the night passed, both Chettipillais slept. In the morning, they looked around for the old woman they had seen the previous night, but she was nowhere to be found. They made a conventional Vilakku offering there and continued their journey towards Kandiyoor Mattom palace. Upon their arrival at the palace, they shared their strange experience from the previous night with the king. The king consulted an astrologer and conducted devaprasna, which revealed the presence of Parashakthi [Goddess Bhavathy], the Ardhanga of Mahadeva, at the site. As desired by Devi, the king constructed a temple there, replacing the Kaavu. This is the legend behind the construction of Ramapuram Devi Temple. In the 18th century CE, the Kayamkulam dynasty came under the reign of Thrippapor. After capturing Kayamkulam, Marthandavarma neglected the Ramapuram temple due to several failures in subduing the Kayamkulam dynasty, attributed to the divine strength of the Sree Chakra of Bhagavathy. In an attempt to assert their supremacy, Marthandavarma destroyed the temple and abodes of Upadevathas, freezing temple wealth transactions. However, after Marthandavarma's rule, the new King of Trippapoor [Travancore], Karthikathirunal, showed more leniency towards the Ramapuram Temple. Under the leadership of Koyikkalethu Adichaman Sreekandan Kumaran, the then caretaker of the temple, permission was obtained to reconstruct the temple. King Karthikathirunal also returned all the rights of the temple to the Koyikkalathe family as part of reconciliation. Adichaman Sreekandan Kumaran and the villagers decided to reconstruct the temple and called in the Bhattathiris of Purakkad Illom to rededicate the temple in Ramapuram. The Punaprathishta [rededication] was held on the 976th year of the Malayalam Era, on the Karthika Star of Makaram Month.
