Palakkad, popularly known as the Granary of Kerala and famous for its historical monuments has been blessed with one of the rarest temples of South Kerala that is of Goddess Sree Pechiyamman, located at Kulalapalayam (presently Pechiyamman Nagar), Kalpathy, the heritage cultural village and the temple abode of Lord Viswanatha. Goddess Sree Pechiyamman along with twenty-five deities viz. Uchima Kaliyamman, Mariamman, Periya Pechi, Kunkuma Pechi, Manchama Pechi, Pappathi Amma, Sangili Karuppan, Aakasa karuppan, Chudala Karuppan, Karuppa Swamy, Periya Karuppan, Iyanar, Lada Sanyasi, Ganapathi, Subramanian, Madhura Veeran, Bommi Amma, Vella Amma, Bhairavan, Agni Madan, Madathi, Madayyan, Irulappan, Nagarajan & Muniswaran shower blessings upon lakhs of devotees visiting the temple more from in and around the country and abroad year after year. The idol is fiery in appearance but the Goddess is most benevolent and is facing unusually towards the North. Legend: The temple's legend can be traced back to around 800 years. It is originally connected with the Sree Viswanatha Swamy Temple construction at Kalpathy. The history is as follows: The then ruler (Naduvazhi) of Palakkad had invited personnel from Thanjavur (Tanjore, Tamil Nadu) for construction work of Sree Viswanatha Swamy temple. They were provided with separate land for their stay by the ruler and the land belonged to temple devaswom. To continue with their day-to-day activities the people decided to dig a well in the land allocated to them. During digging, the axe was found to dash upon a fearful-looking idol beneath the soil. The idol appeared bleeding. Understanding the power and grace of the idol, the settlers decided to consecrate the same and perform puja and rituals. This was continued by their God-fearing successors who continue to stay there till date. The well from which the idol was excavated still exists providing an everlasting fountain of fresh water.  From the day of the Prathishta till date, devotees from various walks of life have visited the temple, knowing the divine power of Goddess to seek her blessings Festivals-The Pechiyamman Pooja Mahotsavam is the main festival associated with this historic temple which lasts for eight days. The festival falls in the month of 'Medam' (April), starting on the first Tuesday after 'Vishu' and continuing for 8 days. The festival is celebrated with pomp and splendour with Mariyamman puja on the starting day, Kaliyamman Puja on the concluding day and Sree Pechiyamman Puja on Friday, Saturday & Sunday. Of this, the puja on Sunday is considered to be the most auspicious. It is the only day in the year when Devi Puja is performed using the "Nivedya" (offerings) prepared by the devotees. An exclusive and traditional event also conducted on this particular day is known as “POO MEDHI" (walking bare feet on embers of fire). There is a mythology related to this POO MEDHI. Sree Pechiyamman is the incarnation of Devi Sree Parvathy. It is said that to dishonour Lord Shiva, Daksha conducted a Yaga (holy sacrifice). Devi Sree Parvathy decided to interfere and destroy this Yaga and did the same along with "Parivara" (Sivagana or devotees of Lord Shiva). The POO MEDHI is conducted to commemorate this holy event. Devotees with immense prayer and Japa' enter into this holy fire bed as if they are walking upon a bed of flowers and come out unhurt. After performing this ritual, the devotees are believed to enter into a new healthy and prosperous life. This event also indicates that the twenty-five deities along with Sree Pechiyamman are ardent devotes of Lord Shiva. Another festival associated with this place of worship is the "Molavalarthal". Nine separate sorts of grains are made to sprout for a week and after festivities and pujas, they are immersed in the holy Kalpathy river. The sprouting of those grains indicates a good harvest, prosperity and ultimately wealth for devotees of Devi Sree Pechiyamman. This festival is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Karkidakam on the 18th day. The temple premises built in that bygone age were reconstructed for a "Punaprathishta Ashtabandhana Maha Kumbhabhisheka".  The day-to-day activities of the temple are looked into by a Committee selected from among the villagers.
