Aruvippuram is a village in Thiruvananthapuram district. The banks of the Neyyaar river at Aruvipuram is regarded as the birthplace of one of the most revolutionary movements in the history of India where the right to worship was given to those who had been denied it for centuries. On the day of Shivarathri in the year 1888, Sree Narayana Guru dived into the deepest part of the Neyyar river at midnight and re appeared after a long time with a Sivalinga. Holding it close to his chest he went to the make shift temple and consecrated the idol there. Now, apart from the Siva more temple, the Guru Mandapam, where the Guru used to meditate and meet people, has been made into a place for the worship of Guru.
