History

Kottangal Sree Mahabhadrakali Temple is dedicated to the Goddess Bhadrakali. It is located in Kottangal, a village in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, India. The temple is one of the most famous temples in Kerala and is known for its annual Padayani festival. The temple is believed to have been built in the 10th century by the Chera dynasty. The presiding deity of the temple is Bhadrakali, who is a form of the Goddess Durga. Bhadrakali is worshipped as the protector of the village from evil forces. The temple also has more shrines dedicated to Ganapathy, Ayyappan, Rakshas, Bhuthathan, Yakshiamma, and Nagaraja. The annual Padayani festival is held at the temple during the months of December and January. The festival is a celebration of the victory of good over evil. The Padayani is a dance-drama that tells the story of the battle between Bhadrakali and the demon Darikasura. The dance is performed by a group of men who wear elaborate costumes and masks. The Kottangal Sree Mahabhadrakali Temple is a popular pilgrimage destination and is known for its beautiful architecture and festive atmosphere.
