Guruvayoor Sree Parthasarathy Temple

History

This temple is located near the famous Sree Krishna temple near Manjulal in eastern nada, Guruvayoor. The consecration of the present deity in this temple was performed by the sanctified hands of Sri Adi Sankara during the 8th century, according to the astrological and historical records. The present idol according to records was worshipped by Goddess Kunthi Devi, mother of Pandavas. It is heard that on instruction from Goddess Kunthi Devi, the idol was immersed in the Ganges. After the battle of Mahabharatha, Sage Narada requested Lord Krishna to bless him with his Viswarupa. Lord Krishna consoled Sage Narada that he will be more blessed with his Viswarupa on this place where Sree Parthasarathy temple is located. During the Guruvayur Ekadasi Day, Sri Adi Sankara and Sage Narada were blessed with the Viswarupa of the Lord. On instruction from Lord Krishna the idol of Sree Parthasarathy was got from the Ganges (Holly River) and installed in the placeSri Adi Sankara, after having installed the idol, codified the poojas in the Parthasarathy temple. The above incident itself is an indication of divine connection, between Guruvayur temple and Sree Parthasarathy temple. On Ekadasi day Lord Guruvayoorappan's Ezhunnallippu with 3 caparisoned elephants go to Parthasarathy temple in the morning and similarly Lord Parthasarathy's idol and the idol of Arjuna in chariot go to Guruvayur temple from Sree Parthasarathy temple in the evening. It is not out of place to mention that this is one of the temples which celebrates the Sankara Jayanthi every year to mark the Adi Sankara connection with this temple. This is one of the rare temples which have Navagraha Gods, installed in one round stone, each graham not facing the other. The other sub- deities installed in the temple are Ganapathy, Ayyappan and Adi Sankara. The temple was a Mahakshetra in those days, but subsequently due to Sannyasins' curses and mismanagement, the temple got ruined and remained as such for long. It was during 1973, the locals and devotees around this place formed a committee headed by Late Brahmasree Anjam Madhavan Namboodiri and Late Adv. P. V. Radhakrishnan to renovate the temple. With the unstinted support of devotees far and wide, the Flag Mast (Duaja Pradhishta) could installed during 1995 and thus, the temple has again attained the status of Mahakshthra. The remaining renovation work has almost been completed.
