Sree Kuzhikattukavu Bhagavathy Temple

History

This temple, more than 100 years old, is at Edathala in Aluva Thaluk of Ernakaulam District. Vanadurgs and Annapoorneswari are consecrated here. There used to be a Brahmin family named Kuzhikattsery mana in this place before the time of the invasion by Tippu Sultan. It was a rich family with vast extent of land in possession. There was a Nair family also living close by. When the Brahmin family started losing its property and found it difficult to continue looking after the family deity, the eldest member gave the temple and some land to the Nair family named Nadathedath. It is also believed that he more deposited whatever that was left with him in the pond near the temple. No one has been able to take the treasure left in the pond; it has not even been possible to measure its depth. As time passed the Manaykkakath Kulam (The pond inside the Mana) became Makaykkakulangara and Kuzhikattseri mana became Kuzhikattsery kavu. In 1950 this land was taken over by the Government of India for the National Armament Depot (NAD). The temple with two consecrations in two sanctums came to be included in the acquired land. So, in 1956 – 58 the temple was relocated to the three cents of land which remained with the temple. The main deities, Vanadurgs and Annapoorneswari, were consecrated in one sanctum in the small temple. Panchamoorthikal and other subordinate deities were consecrated outside the sanctum. Though it remained a family temple the local people used to co-operate in conducting the festival of the temple. With the continued co-operation of the people a fund was collected for the temple. By 1985 the land for the temple which was a mere 3 cents at the beginning became 25 cents. As it became difficult for one family to manage the temple it was handed over to the local people. A committee was formed for the management of the temple. Renovation of the old structure was started in 2000 and completed in 2017 with re - consecration. Today the temple, surrounded by forest, attracts many devotees every day.
