Sri Venkatesh Bhat of Mangalore came to Cannanore and opened a small Bhajana cum Worship hall in the 17th century, which was called Venkatesh Bhat's Mutt. Later, the Prathistha of Sri Venkataramana was performed and shrine of Goddess Mahamaya was also built and it came to be known as Sree Venkataramana Temple. Sree Venkataramana Mahamaya Temple, Kannur is a sacred temple about 400 years old, belonging to the GS.B.Community. It has got a unique Divinity and Sanctity of its own. The Devasthan is the Abhayastan for the devotees. The oracle ("Darshan") during Navarathri is famed to be prophetic and protective. It attracts devotees more from far and near. They have an abiding faith in the "Darshan" which answers their prayers affording mental peace and solution to their problems and miseries. Many miraculous incidents have happened. "Santhana labha" - child to the childless, unknown hand of help to those facing failures in life, matrimonial success, amicable settlement of family disputes, success in business or profession and such umpteen issues. Such being the holy traditions of this ancient shrine it is the duty of the devotees to uphold and nurture this tradition and divinity of the shrine. Renovation work of the Temple was completed and the Puna Prathishta Mahotsav celebrated spectacularly in the holy presence of Sree Kasi Madathipathi his holiness Srimad Sudheendra Theertha Swamiji from 28th April to 1 May 2005.The temple is governed by the Board of Trustees and the chairman of the Board is V. Prakash Maller with A.Jagathish Pai and R. Sreekar Pai as other trustees. G.S.B. Mahamaya Seva Samithi under which the festivals of the temple are conducted consists of 15 members with A. Panduranga Prabhu as the President, V. Ajith Maller as the Secretary and Dr. M. Padmanabha Shenoy as the treasurer.
