Oottukulangara Bhagavathy Temple

History

Palakkad district is blessed with so many powerful temples among which is the one at Ootukulangara.  Goddess who is self-originated and quick tempered is Bhadrakali in her pious and calm mood. Story of the origin of the temple is connected with a Panan. He was fishing in a pond in the middle of a forest and heard a sweet melodious music from somewhere but the singer was unseen. Panan forgot everything and enjoyed the song of the unseen singer. The singer, pleased with his attitude towards music asked him about his interest in music. He replied that he has more great interest in music and wished to see the singer. The unseen singer’s voice told him to close his eyes and look with one eye; then only he will be able to see the singer. Panan did so and saw the Devi who was swinging. He got frightened and summoned peoples from Anchukudi communities of the nearby area. All those people saw Devi’s pleasant and calm status and became disciples of that Devi. They prayed and settled her under an Asoka tree. Worshipers increased day by day and devotees from various places visited this temple for fulfilling their wishes. Sub deities of this temple are Bhairava, Brahmarakshas, Serpents with Ayyapan’s presence. It is believed that physical and mental worries, other defects, marriage problems, entrance of all evil spirits etc are blocked by Bhirava Swamy. As the main Goddess has no shrine, it is supposed that the feet of the Devi are erected here and Pada Pooja is the main worship of the temple. To increase the power of Devi, Shiva-Parvathy is seated on the left and Lakshmi-Narayanan on the right side of the Goddess. There are so many stories related to this temple among which one is connected with the festival. Elephants are not allowed in this temple festival, which is very rare phenomenon. It is believed that Goddess ordered not to bring elephants for the festival as the member of the festival committee mockingly asked to start the festival and elephants will be coming.  Fireworks also are not allowed in the temple. Devi’s sister got frightened and jumped in to the pond during fireworks and from then onwards fireworks also are banned. Devi’s sister Thuppanampully bhagavathy’s temple is still situated the half way to the pond. Devi likes to hear musical instruments and so it is prominently used during festivals. Chanthabhishekam is the main offering to Devi in the temple. Devi likes chanthabhishekam than any other thing. This Chanthu is prepared by Mandhadiyar Community of Vithannassery after seeking enough penance and fasting from teak wood. Coronating Devi with this chanthu is a beautiful sight and people from various places visit and get enlightened seeing Devi bathed in Chanthu.
