Sree Kottukulangara Bhagavathy Temple

History

The Bhagavathy of this famous temple was originally the family deity of the Mandaattil family. This family was one of the 18 families that belonged to the Vellaamkoor tribe. At that time Palakkad was a forest area and a part of the Peru kingdom. This family later got separated into many branches and each had a family deity. The Kotukulangara temple belonged to one branch named Mandaattil. When the effulgence of the family deity was consecrated at a temple that was constructed near a pond at Kannaadi. As the members of the family were thinking of a name for the temple, they saw a flock more of white storks flying up from the pond. So, it was named Kottukulathi.
