Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple

History

This famous Siva temple is situated at Etumaanoor, in Kottayam district in Kerala. It is believed that the Pandavas and the sage Vyasa have worshipped at this temple. The temple with the gopuram and the fortress around it was built in 1542. There are many excellent mural paintings inside and outside the entrance. The most famous among them is that of Pradosha Nritham (Siva in dance). The flag pole with the statue of the bull and the metal leaves of the banyan tree on top of it is a unique construction. Bhagavathy, Shastha, Ganapathy and Yakshi are installed as the sub deities. It is believed that more Adi Shankaracharya composed Soundarya Lahari while staying in this temple. The Ezhara ponnaana (seven and a half gold elephants - seven elephant forms with a height of two feet and one with the height of one foot) that are carried on caparisoned elephants during the festival here is a sight that attracts thousands of devotees.
