Sree Krishna Garuda Swami Temple

History

This temple at Thiruvaaniyoor near Chottanikara in Ernakula District, is more than 1000 years old. It is believed to be the only temple where Garuda was present at the consecration of the deity. The deities worshipped here are Garuda, the vehicle of Maha Vishnu, Sree Krishna and Maha Vishnu in the form of Mohini. This is the only temple in Kerala where the three deities have been consecrated together. The rituals here are similar to those followed at the famous Guruvayoor temple. The sanctum of Maha Vishnu and that of Sree Krishna face in the same direction. The people of Chemmanad used to worship Maha more Vishnu as Mohini from ancient times. Then a new sanctum was constructed to consecrate the idol on a higher level. The new sanctum was semicircular in shape with the rafters decorated with carvings of Dashavathara and other sculptures. The Thanthri (chief priest) went for a bath in the temple pond before consecrating the Maha Vishnu idol in the new sanctum. There he saw a wooden box coming up from under the water. Inside it were three idols of Vishnu. After astrological consultations the smallest idol, that of Sree Krishna, was consecrated in the newly constructed sanctum. The other two were consecrated at the nearby Thulavankulangara variyam and Perumpalliyl Vylopilly. The chief priest and others waited for long for Garuda to appear in the sky to consecrate the idol of Sree Krishna but it did not appear. So, they completed the consecration and offered puja and naivedyam. But when the Chief Priest got out of the sanctum a huge garuda came and sat on the rafter on which the figure of Garuda had been carved, indicating the correct time for the consecration. So, the priest used the sanctified water that was left after the consecration of the Sree Krishna idol and consecrated Garuda on the rafter.
